Since 1893, when the Faith was first mentioned in North America, the American Baha’i community has striven to give expression to the oneness of humanity, the core principle of Baha’u’llah’s, message, by seeking to recognize and eliminate racial prejudice and oppression, advancing the equality of women and men, and deliberately building vibrant spiritual communities that reflect and embrace the human family in all its diversity.
The Baha’i community is at the forefront of a journey, fueled by hope and the divine promise of Baha’u’llah. The community’s commitment to the principle of the oneness of humanity has offered both inspiration and consolation to those emerging out of the fear and oppression of a society divided by the historical influence of slavery and anti-blackness and a testing ground for others to overcome long-standing societal-wide false notions of white supremacy. Understanding the path toward unity is not “a matter that exclusively concerns the other.” Through the years, the community’s achievements have shifted from the work of individuals to group efforts and collective advancement.
“Man must walk in many paths and be subjected to various processes in his evolution upward. …Briefly, the journey of the soul is necessary. The pathway of life is the road which leads to divine knowledge and attainment.”
-Abdu’l-Baha
