Kevin Locke Memorialized

People from all over North America came together at the Baha’i House of Worship in Wilmette, Illinois, to honor the life and remarkable impact of Kevin Locke.  A memorial service was held there on the evening of March 25, 2023. Many in attendance shared their touching and inspiring remembrances as a tribute and a reflection on his profound influence on the world.

Locke was widely recognized as one of the world’s most engaging flutists, hoop dancers and storytellers. He shared traditional Native American culture with audiences globally through his captivating performances. Locke passed away on September 30, 2023, at the age of 68 in Hill City, South Dakota.

Locke, who was of Standing Rock Sioux and Anishinaabe descent, called Wakpala on the Standing Rock Reservation his home when he wasn’t traveling the world as a performing arts ambassador. He visited more than 100 countries. His tireless efforts to promote Indigenous American culture through the arts touched the hearts of many.

One of Locke’s most notable contributions was his traditional hoop dance, which he believed exemplified the unity of humankind. He expressed this belief through his artistry, saying, “Through my music and dance, I want to create a positive awareness of the oneness of humanity.”

In addition to his contributions to preserving the Lakota language and art forms, Locke will be remembered for his service to the Baha’i Faith, including his service on the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of the United States.
